🇬🇧 Not in my Name

Blog post from my stint as Incidental New Yorker, September 9, 2015

It is painful to follow events in Europe from my new
outpost. When I saw a photo the other day in one of my Danish newspapers of a
man on an overpass, literally spitting on Syrian refugees walking
below,  just off the ferry in Denmark, I felt acute pain and deep shame.
Because this is not my country – or it isn’t what I believe my...

Outside

⭐ Four nights of salubrious sleep, open windows, fresh air, birdsong, quiet, splendid nights. Late afternoon swimming in the lake; loons, hummingbirds, bald headed eagles, quaint fishing villages, coves with glassy water. Seafood, fish, fresh, natural vegetables. Bliss! Okay, so we did leave NYC for a spell. We had a...

Joyside

⭐ Every day reveals new pockets in that extraordinary entity that is New York! Rather than go away for a week’s holiday, we decided to stay in New York to explore our temporary home. I bought tickets for Bargemusic in DUMBO, so last night, not quite knowing what to expect we took the ferry into the sunset and disembarked...

Cecil the Lion

August 2, 2015

⭐ I can
definitely recommend Cymbelene in Central Park, part of the set being the
rising, slightly waning Moon. The play is one of Shakespeare’s lesser known,
but is made of all the true stuff. Lust for power, war, evil, poison, cunning,
jealousy, hate, stupidity and yes, true love. It was performed by The Public
Theater described by NYT as “the country’s de facto national theatre.”...

East River

© Mette Holm

July 27, 2015

We took this lovely trip with the East River Ferry yesterday from the pier at E34th St., under the impressive bridges with a few stops at Long Island before returning to Manhattan at Pier 11. Bright sunshine, lovely breeze and above us in the air like huge mosquitoes the constant buzzing of helicopters, sternly supervised by the Statue...

Brooklyn Bridge

July 17, 2015

My travels have
most always taken me eastward. But now I've gone West and am to call New York
home for the next 15 months or so. I know parts of Asia like the back of my
hand. Now I am exploring NYC! Oh, the pulse, the energy. It reminds me of Hong
Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and other major Chinese cities, some of which I have
also called home - the permanent noise, the ridiculous, unnecessarily loud...

🇬🇧 China’s Bully-Diplomacy

When foreign leaders bow to China’s irate demands that they do not meet with the Dalai Lama it is by no means out of respect. It is because China transforms into a thug, totally resistant to reason.

By Mette Holm, 8 February, 2015

Recently,
Tibet’s exiled religious leader the Dalai Lama attended President Obama’s
National Prayer Breakfast in...

🇬🇧 Speech at the opening of Wang Qingsong’s exhibition at KØS

KØS, Museum of art in public spaces, 15 March, 2014

Thank you for
inviting me here today. Christine Buhl Andersen & Tereza de Aruda have
already spoken about the exhibition and the artist, Wang Qingsong. I have been
specifically asked not to talk about art in China, but the space in which
artists express themselves.

🇩🇰 Tale ved anti-folkedrabsdagen i Tivolis Glassal

Lørdag d. 28. januar 2012

Deres Excellencer, mine damer og herrer; excellencies, ladies and gentlemen ….

Verden er fuld af valg, ligegyldige,
gode, sjove, spændene, afgørende valg – såvel som de aldeles umenneskelige …..

Ingen burde blive stillet over for sådan et valg. Vi...

🇬🇧 Chinese media trying to conquer the world – and world opinion

China is investing massive amounts of money, energy and prestige in creating a new impression of herself, internally as well as to the rest of the world. CCTV International tries to challenge al-Jazeera, BBC and CNN on global news coverage. The good old communist propaganda mill is developing into a sophisticated narrative through an almost unlimited variety of outlets, be it museums, history books, cinema, sports, business or – in particular - media. The state...
